An Exclusive Interview With TLG Advisor, Susan Hitchcock

Susan Hitchcock

Why is investing in the next generation of leaders important?

I can think of nothing more important. In my lifetime, I’ve never felt the need for investing in our future (locally, nationally and globally) more than I do now. Everything’s changing either for the good or for the not so good and we need the next generation to be as prepared as humanly possible to deal with matters affecting all of our lives, personally and professionally, as citizens and as humans.

What is the greatest benefit of TLG being involved with SCALE?

The benefit is twofold. First, TLG has the ability – the experience, the expertise, and the staff – to make a positive impact on college students as they start their life and leadership journey. We know the challenges leaders face every day, we’ve worked with hundreds of individuals and teams across every sector. We also have a model of leadership – The Leadership Character Model – that can be shared and studied by students helping them to define and shape their own leadership approach. The second benefit is that TLG gets to learn first hand from the next generation about their perspective and understanding of the world around them. They inform TLG about how to best communicate, collaborate and connect with their generation.

Can you share any impactful stories or moments from your experience working with young leaders?

For many years, decades actually, I’ve mentored dozens and dozens of young people, students as well as early career professionals. I always admire individuals who are seeking to learn. One example involves an ASC sophomore who I met casually on campus; was impressed with her confidence and interest in connecting with me. Through TLG I was able to help her get an internship; she was so impressive we offered her a fulltime position after graduation; and later supported her / encouraged her pursuit of a masters in organizational development. That young woman has gone on to become a highly successful business consultant and entrepreneur among other creative outlets. She and I continue to connect as she continues her life and professional journey. And I continue to learn from her based on myriad experiences she’s had and skills she has developed. It’s an example of a mutually beneficial long term relationship and two leaders from different generations learning and growing together.

What skills and characteristics do you believe are most critical for the next generation of leaders?

For me, using the Leadership Character Model is one of the best ways to talk about what next generation or any generation of leaders need. They need integrity first and foremost as a foundation; then they need to balance respect (the people side of leadership) with responsibility (the results side of leadership.) Leaders need humility and confidence, empathy and accountability, emotional mastery and courage, among other characteristics. They also need to keep up with technical advances especially in the evolving impact of AI and how that can be used for help businesses, consumers, and humanity. I also think curiosity, compassion and collaboration are essential to the best leaders.

What advice would you give to organizations looking to invest in young leaders?

Step up and offer more opportunities for internships and experiential projects to engage young leaders. Listen to them – discuss challenges with them – ask how they’d solve certain problems – invite them to attend leadership programs your organization sponsors.

How can young leaders take ownership of their growth and development?

Step up and pursue opportunities. Don’t be afraid to introduce yourself and when given the opportunity, say YES. Connect with leaders and professionals in a variety of fields through Linked In, professional organizations, etc. Always show gratitude and respect for support you’re given and pass it on!!
